چکیده

19 The objective of this pilot study was to investigate the influence of rein contact and 20 the movement of the rider’s hand on the horse’s behaviour, analysing data on horses ridden 21 in two different head and neck positions. We hypothesized that the rider’s hand movements 22 and rein tension generate behavioural responses from the horse, and more so when ridden 23 on the bit compared to free and unrestrained. Data were collected from seven dressage 24 horses/riders in sitting trot on a high-speed treadmill. Kinematics were recorded using a 25 12-camera, infrared-based opto-electronic system. Behavioural recordings were made from 26 video and three horses wore a rein tension meter. After stride split, data were standardised 27 to 0-100% stride duration. Mixed models were used to analyse how the behaviours varied 28 over the stride cycle; trial within horse was treated as a random effect, while percentage of 29 stride, rein tension and kinematic variables mainly related to the rider’s hand were entered 30 as fixed effects. Behaviours discerned were lip movement, mouth movement, open mouth, 31 ear position, head tilt and tail movement. Mouth movements were associated with the 32 suspension phase of the trot and percentage of stride was highly significant (P<0.0001). 33 Head and neck position was non-significant in the final models, while rein tension and the 34 distance between the rider’s hand and the horse’s mouth affected the amount of mouth 35 movements. The results from this preliminary study convey the large variations between 36 horses and riders, as well as the complexity of the interaction. 37 38

Coordination dynamics in horse-rider dyads.

The sport of equestrianism is defined through close horse-rider interaction. However, no consistent baseline parameters currently exist describing the coordination dynamics of horse-rider movement across different equine gaits. The study aims to employ accelerometers to investigate and describe patterns of motor coordination between horse and rider across the equine gaits of walk, rising trot, ...

Basic kinematics of the saddle and rider in high-level dressage horses trotting on a treadmill.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY A comprehensive kinematic description of rider and saddle movements is not yet present in the scientific literature. OBJECTIVE To describe saddle and rider movements in a group of high-level dressage horses and riders. METHOD Seven high-level dressage horses and riders were subjected to kinematic measurements while performing collected trot on a treadmill. For a...

Hazards of horse-riding as a popular sport.

The increasing incidence of horse-riding accidents, which are often severe in nature, prompted a pilot study of a questionnaire designed to elucidate the cause of such accidents. It was hoped that, on a larger scale, the information gleaned would highlight possible preventative measures which might improve the safety of an important recreational pursuit enjoyed by young and old from many walks ...

The horse-saddle-rider interaction.

Common causes of poor performance in horses include factors related to the horse, the rider and/or the saddle, and their interrelationships remain challenging to determine. Horse-related factors (such as thoracolumbar region pain and/or lameness), rider-related factors (such as crookedness, inability to ride in rhythm with the horse, inability to work the horse in a correct frame to improve cor...

Modelling biomechanical requirements of a rider for different horse-riding techniques at trot.

The simplest model possible for bouncing systems consists of a point mass bouncing passively on a mass-less spring without viscous losses. This type of spring-mass model has been used to describe the stance period of symmetric running gaits. In this study, we investigated the interaction between horse and rider at trot using three models of force-driven spring (-damper)-mass systems. The first ...
